INTRO: MORE U-S COMBAT TROOPS ARRIVED THURSDAY IN KUWAIT AS PART
OF A CONTINUING WESTERN MILITARY BUILD-UP IN THE GULF IN THE
ONGOING CONFRONTATION OVER IRAQ'S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.
V-O-A MIDDLE EAST CORRESPONDENT DOUGLAS ROBERTS IN KUWAIT REPORTS
THE TROOP DEPLOYMENT AT DETERRING ANY IRAQI RETALIATION AGAINST
KUWAIT IN THE EVENT OF A WESTERN MILITARY STRIKE ON IRAQI WEAPONS
SITES.

TEXT: NEARLY 400 SOLDIERS FROM THE U-S THIRD INFANTRY DIVISION
ARRIVED HERE THURSDAY ON A CHARTERED FLIGHT FROM FORT STUART IN
THE SOUTHERN STATE OF GEORGIA.

THE TROOPS CAME OFF THE PLANE CARRYING ONLY THEIR RIFLES AND
PERSONAL BELONGINGS. THEIR TANKS, ARTILLERY, AND OTHER EQUIPMENT
HAVE BEEN PRE-POSITIONED HERE UNDER THE TERMS OF A DEFENSE ACCORD
WITH KUWAIT.

THE HEAD OF THE U-S OFFICE OF MILITARY COOPERATION HERE, GENERAL
PAUL MIKOLASHEK, WAS AMONG THOSE ON HAND TO GREET THE TROOPS AT
KUWAIT AIRPORT.

                    ///  MIKOLASHEK ACT  ///

         THEY WILL GO THROUGH A PROCESS OF DRAWING THAT EQUIPMENT
         AND MOVING OUT TO THE DESERT WHERE THEY WILL CONDUCT
         TRAINING AND WORK WITH THEIR COALITION PARTNERS HERE IN
         THE DEFENSE OF KUWAIT.

                        ///  END ACT  ///

WITHIN HOURS OF THEIR ARRIVAL, THE SOLDIERS WERE STARTING UP THE
UNIT'S ABRAMS TANKS AND BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLES AT A BASE A FEW
KILOMETERS NORTH OF KUWAIT CITY.

SOME OF THESE TROOPS ARE VETERANS OF DESERT STORM, THE VAST
ALLIED CAMPAIGN THAT DROVE IRAQI FORCES OUT OF KUWAIT SEVEN YEARS
AGO THIS MONTH.

BUT OTHERS, LIKE SERGEANT JOHN KEETER ARE DEPLOYING IN THE
ARABIAN DESERT FOR THE FIRST TIME.

                      ///  TEETER ACT  ///

         YEAH, I'M A LITTLE NERVOUS NOW, JUST BECAUSE OF THE
         ENVIRONMENT AND WHAT'S GOING ON HERE.

                        ///  END ACT  ///

MOST OF THE SOLDIERS HERE SAY THEY HAVE BEEN CLOSELY FOLLOWING
DEVELOPMENTS IN THE IRAQ CRISIS.

LIEUTENANT DESHAUN BROWN SAYS SHE HOPES IT WILL NOT LEAD TO
WAR, BUT SAYS SHE UNDERSTANDS THE NEED TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO
MORE IRAQI ATTACKS ON KUWAIT.

                       ///  BROWN ACT  ///

         I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE HOW THESE PEOPLE FELT BACK IN 90-91
         WHEN IRAQI FORCES CAME ACROSS THEIR BORDERS, AND JUST
         TOOK THEIR COUNTRY. TO ME, FREEDOM IS THE MOST
         IMPORTANT REASON.

                        ///  END ACT  ///

THERE ARE ALREADY ABOUT FOUR-THOUSAND U-S COMBAT TROOPS HERE AND
SEVERAL THOUSAND MORE ARE EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT WEEK AS PART OF
THE CONTINUING WESTERN MILITARY BUILDUP IN THE REGION. (SIGNED)
