ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT, ADDRESSING REGRETTABLE DEVELOPMENTS IN IRAQ, STRESSES RESPECT FOR PROVISIONS OF UN CHARTER

Following is a statement by the President of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, Didier Opertti (Uruguay), on the situation in Iraq:

In view of the regrettable developments taking place in Iraq, the President of the General Assembly expresses his confidence that the mechanisms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations to ensure international peace and security will lead to a solution to the conflict based on the strict observance of the provisions of the Charter and the fulfilment of the obligations assumed.
