
Religious Leaders, Aide Workers, Students and Peace Activists Demand an End to Economic Sanctions against Iraq Press Conference to Highlight National Day of Action and Student Week of Action PRESS ADVISORY : FOR APRIL 27, 1999 CONTACT: Gordon Clark at Peace Action 202-862-9740 ext3007 Convinced that the U.N.-imposed economic sanctions against Iraq are both cruel and illegal, religious leaders are joining forces with humanitarian relief workers, students and peace groups to demand that the sanctions be lifted. Numerous independent reports cite widespread malnutrition, disease and starvation among the Iraqi population, particularly among the elderly and young children; up to one and half million Iraqis have already perished due to the effects of the sanctions, which were imposed over eight years ago. The National Day of Action and Student Week of Actions will encompass demonstrations, press conferences and "post office actions" in dozens of cities across the country, and over 100 college campuses.
