U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE DAILY PRESS BRIEFING BRIEFER: PHILIP T. REEKER, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2000 1:30 P.M. (ON THE RECORD UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED) Q: New subject? Has the United States sought reassurances from Saudi Arabia regarding oil exports in the light of Iraq's consideration of suspending exports if they don't start paying for them in Euros? MR. REEKER: I'm not sure if specific discussions with the Saudis in the light of that - that threat or comments from the Iraqis. It is an issue that is still under discussion. We are reviewing some information provided by the UN Secretariat, and I believe there is a UN staff report from the Secretariat that is expected to be issued shortly. This was a report the Secretariat made to the Sanctions Committee. And the Sanctions Committee is scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss this Euro proposal in detail, and we are obviously still studying that issue. So I just don't have any further details. I think we have discussed before our continuing dialogue with countries like Saudi Arabia about oil. (The briefing was concluded at 2:10 P.M.)
