RUSSIA'S UN ENVOY CALLS FOR LIFTING SANCTIONS ON IRAQ. Russian Permanent
Representative to the United Nations Sergei Lavrov told ITAR-TASS on 3
January that the humanitarian situation in Iraq could be radically improved
by lifting sanctions against Baghdad. In the same interview, Lavrov said
that Russia's chairmanship of the UN Security Council in December 2000 had
promoted international cooperation in the struggle against international
terrorism. PG
