STATE DEPARTMENT REPORT, TUESDAY, MARCH 17

(Israel/loan guarantees, Israel/inspection team, Baker/Arens) (570)
NEWS BRIEFING -- Spokesman Margaret Tutwiler discussed the following
topics:

INSPECTION TEAM WILL FOCUS ON PATRIOT TECHNOLOGY
Tutwiler said that a team of U.S. experts will leave this week for Israel
to answer questions about U.S. laws governing the export and resale of U.S.
technology and weapons. She said the team will focus on the Patriot
1nti-missile system that Israel obtained from the United States.

The team will be in Israel for several days, she said, noting that it is not
connected with the State Department's Office of the Inspector General which
is looking at the departmental office that oversees the foreign sale of
U.S. weapons and technology. The team will include department officials
and technical experts from the Defense Department, she said.

"Israel has agreed to a team of U.S. experts to travel to Israel to ensure
that there are not any misunderstandings on technology transfer questions,
including on the Patriot missile" she said. "We welcome this Israeli
gesture."
