CHENEY, RABIN DISCUSS ISRAEL'S SECURITY NEEDS
Defense Secretary Cheney and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin
discussed Israel's special security needs in an August 11 meeting at the
Pentagon.

1heney reaffirmed the United States' commitment to maintaining Israel's
"qualitative edge."  He also told Rabin that a number of joint U.S.-Israeli
projects which are currently underway should be continued.

In their discussion of Israel's need for defenses against ballistic
missiles, Cheney cited the two countries' commitment to the Israeli Arrow
missile project.

The two defense ministers also discussed a range of regional and bilateral
issues including the current situation in Iraq and the status of the peace
process.
