PAKISTAN MISSION TO THE

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK

COMMENTS OF THE FOREIGN OFFICE SPOKESMAN IN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS ON THE TWO ADDITIONAL NUCLEAR TESTS CARRIED OUT BY INDIA ON 13 MAY 1998

When asked to comment on the latest Indian tests the Foreign Office spokesman said that these tests have once again brought into focus the utter contempt in which New Delhi holds the world public opinion particularly the non-proliferation efforts. The muted and tentative response of the major powers has further encouraged India to show its total defiance. The South Asian region has been thrown into turmoil and its security has been severely endangered.

The latest tests are particularly provocative as they are by nature aimed at perfection of battlefield tactical weapons threatening the security of India's immediate neighbours.

Pakistan once again reiterates that it will take all measures in consonance with the threat posed to Pakistan's security and the need for the protection of our national interests.
