PRIME MINISTER:

THE PRIME MINISTER MR. MOHAMMAD NAWAZ SHARIF HAS SAID THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS FULLY AWARE OF THE COUNTRY'S LEGITIMATE SECURITY CONCERNS AND WE WOULD ALONE DETERMINE AS TO WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO SAFEGUARD OUR SOVEREIGNTY AND INDEPENDENCE.

THE PRIME MINISTER WAS COMMENTING ON INDIAN NUCLEAR TESTS AT ISLAMABAD TODAY ON ARRIVAL FROM ALMATY AFTER ATTENDING THE ECO SUMMIT. WE WILL DECIDE OURSELVES WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR SECURITY WITHOUT TAKING DICTATION FROM ANY QUARTER.

THE PRIME MINISTER ASSURED THE NATION THAT WE ARE NOT OBLIVIOUS OF OUR SECURITY CONCERNS AND WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE OUR OWN DECISIONS. PAKISTAN HAS TIMELY EXPRESSED ITS APPREHENSIONS ON BJP GOVERNMENT'S TALK OF NUCLEAR OPTION AND INDUCTING NUCLEAR WEAPONS BUT INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY DID NOT TAKE NOTICE. NOW IT IS OUR JOB ALONE TO DECIDE WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR SECURITY. THE PRIME MINISTER REMARKED HE SAID INDIAN NUCLEAR TESTS ARE NOT A SURPRISE FOR US AS WE KNEW THEY WILL DO IT AND THEY DID IT.

HE SAID BY DEPLOYING PRITHVI MISSILE INDIA KILLED OUR PROPOSALS FOR A ZERO MISSILE REGIME IN SOUTH ASIA. HE SAID NOW NEW DELHI HAS NOT ONLY DESTROYED THE INTERNATIONALLY ENDORSED CONCEPT OF CREATING A NUCLEAR WEAPONS FREE ZONE IN SOUTH ASIA BUT ALSO DEALT A GRIEVOUS BLOW TO CREATING A NUCLEAR WEAPON FREE ZONE IN THE ENTIRE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. REACTING TO THE TESTS THE CHAIRMAN ALL PARTIES HURRIYIAT CONFERENCE SYED ALI GILANI SAID IN SRINAGAR TODAY THAT THESE UNDERGROUND TESTS WERE IN FACT MEANT TO ESTABLISH INDIAN SUPREMACY OVER NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES SABOTAGING CTBT AND TO DEVIATE 70 PERCENT OF POVERTY STRICKEN INDIAN PEOPLE.

SYED ALI GILANI SAID AS FAR AS JAMMU AND KASHMIR CONFERENCE IS CONCERNED IT IS A DISPUTED TERRITORY, OCCUPIED BY FORCE BY INDIA. THE INDIAN TESTS ARE ALSO MEANT TO KEEP KASHMIR FORCEFULLY UNDER ITS DOMINATION. HE HOWEVER EMPHASISED THAT KASHMIRIS ARE NOT AFRAID OF ANY MILITARY FORCE.

THE CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON KASHMIR CH. GHULAM SARWAR KHAN HAS TERMED THE NUCLEAR TESTS BY INDIA AS A SLAP ON THE FACE OF THE U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL AND SIGNATORIES OF CTBT. HE SAID IT WAS AN ATTEMPT TO DISTRACT THE WORLD ATTENTION FROM THE KASHMIR ISSUE. SECURITY COUNCIL HE SAID IS STRIVING HARD FOR MAINTAINING PEACE IN THE WORLD AND TREATIES SUCH AS CTBT HAVE BEEN SIGNED TO THIS EFFECT. HOWEVER INDIA HAS WASHED AWAY THE IMPACT OF THESE EFFORTS HE ADDED.

MEANWHILE THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF AMERICAN BASED KASHMIR COUNCIL DR. GHULAM NABI FAI IN HIS STATEMENT HAS SAID THAT THE TESTS BY INDIA WAS A PROOF OF THE INDIAN HEGEMONISTIC DESIGNS IN THE REGION.

AND IN OCCUPIED KASHMIR THE INDIAN TROOPS IN FRESH ACTS OF VIOLENCE IMPOSED UN-ANNOUNCED CURFEW IN SOPORE, CARRIED OUT SIEGE AND SEARCH OPERATION IN THE TOWN AND ADJOINING AREAS AND A NUMBER OF YOUTH HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. THE SPOKESMAN SAID, THE PRESIDENT IS DEEPLY DISTRESSED BY THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THREE NUCLEAR TESTS. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, WHILE THE UNITED STATES IS YET TO ANNOUNCE ITS AN OFFICIAL RESPONSE BUT INTENSE MEETINGS ARE GOING ON IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT AND OTHER AGENCIES. IN MOSCOW, RUSSIAN PRESIDENT BORIS YELTSIN HAS ALSO CONDEMNED THE TESTS. ACCORDING TO RUSSIAN NEWS AGENCY, PRESIDENT YELTSIN SAID THAT INDIA HAS LET US DOWN BY CARRYING OUT THREE UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR TESTS.

LONDON BASED ACADEMIC PROFESSOR ARTHUR MILLER SAID, THE SITUATION COULD BE SURPRISINGLY DANGEROUS INN VIEW OF THE OLD HOSTILITIES BETWEEN INDIA AND ITS NEIGHBOURS INCLUDING PAKISTAN AND CHINA. THE PRIME MINISTER HASHMIMOTO EXPRESSED REGRET OVER INDIA'S NUCLEAR TESTING. THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER TOLD REPORTERS AT THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING THAT IT IS VERY REGRETTABLE AND THAT HE HAD SENT A LETTER TO THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER URGING HIS GOVERNMENT NOT TO CONDUCT NUCLEAR TESTING BUT THERE HAS BEEN NO RESPONSE.

MAYORS OF THE JAPANESE CITIES OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI THE TARGETS OF ATOMIC BOMB KILLING DURING WORLD WAR II ADDED THEIR VOICES TO AN INTERNATIONAL PROTEST OVER INDIA'S TESTING. HIROSHIMA MAYOR, TAKASHI HIRAOKA TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE TESTS WERE EXTREMELY DEPLORABLE. NAGASAKI MAYOR ITCHOITO WHO CALLED ON THE INDIAN EMBASSY IN TOKYO DESCRIBED THE TESTS AS AN OUTRAGE THAT RAVAGES THE WISHES OF THE VICTIMS AND CITIZENS IN NAGASAKI.

AUSTRALIA HAS RECALLED ITS HIGH COMMISSIONER TO INDIA AS FOREIGN MINISTER ALEXANDER DOWNER LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN FOR A GLOBAL PROTEST AGAINST INDIA'S NUCLEAR TESTS. CANBERRA ALSO SUMMONED INDIA'S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO LODGE AN OFFICIAL PROTEST OVER THE TESTS SEEN OF AUSTRALIA AS A THREAT TO REGIONAL SECURITY. NEW ZEALAND SAID, IT WOULD RECALLING ITS HIGH COMMISSIONER FROM NEW DELHI FOR CONSULTATIONS. FOREIGN MINISTER, DON MCKINNON, THE HIGH COMMISSIONER ADRIAN SIMCOCK WOULD BE RECALLED IMMEDIATELY FOR DISCUSSIONS WITH HIS GOVERNMENT WHICH HAS BEEN DEEPLY ANGERED BY INDIA'S NUCLEAR TESTS.

INDIA CONDUCTED THREE UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR TESTS AT POKHRAN IN RAJISTHAN YESTERDAY. THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE TOLD NEWSMEN AT HIS RESIDENCE IN NEW DELHI THAT THE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED AT 3.45 P.M. IN THE NORTHERN DESERT STATE OF RAJISTHAN. HE SAID, THE TESTS WERE SIMILAR TO THE UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR TEST ALSO AT POKHRAN IN MAY 1974.

BELGIUM, FRANCE, DENMARK AND THE U.N. SECRETARY GENERAL MR.KOFI ANNAN HAVE ALSO EXPRESSED CONCERN OVER INDIA'S TESTING OF NUCLEAR DEVICES .DEMONSTRATIONS FOR THE SAKE OF NATIONAL STABILITY.

THE UNITED STATES ENVOY RICHARD HOLOBROOKE IS DUE TO HOLD MORE TALKS WITH ETHNIC ALBANIAN LEADER IN KRISTINA THE CAPITAL OF THE SERBIAN PROVINCE OF KOSOVO. MR. HOLBROOKE HAS BEEN HAVING MEETINGS IN KOSOVO ALBANIA AND BELGRADE IN AN ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE ESCALATING CONFLICT IN KOSOVO. AFTER TALKS WITH THE YUGOSLAV PRESIDENT SLOBODAN MILOSEVIC, MR. THE UNITED STATES IS CONTEMPLATING SANCTIONS WHILE AUSTRALIA, AS A MARK OF PROTEST HAS RECALLED ITS HIGH COMMISSIONER FROM NEW DELHI.

MUHAMMAD RAFIQ TARAR SAID TODAY THAT THE THREE NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS CARRIED OUT BY INDIA HAD ENDANGERED PEACE NOT ONLY IN THE SOUTH ASIAN REGION BUT ALSO ON THE GLOBAL LEVEL. TALKING TO NEWSMEN IN LAHORE, THE PRESIDENT SAID THE EXPLOSIONS HAD ALSO EXPOSED INDIA'S AGGRESSIVE MOTIVES.
