3. WORLD LEADERS AT THE GROUP-8 SUMMIT IN BIRMINGHAM CONDEMNS THE NUCLEAR TESTS CARRIED BY INDIA.

NEWS IN DETAIL:

THE PRESIDENT SAID OUR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS ARE WORKING IN CLOSE CO-ORDINATION WITH THEIR BROTHERS IN UNIFORM TO GIVE TO THE COUNTRY THE MUCH DESIRED INDEPENDENCE IN MILITARY PRODUCTION. OUR EFFORTS TO ATTAIN SELF-RELIANCE AND INDIGENIZATION ARE MAKING GOOD PRORESS.

THE PRESIDENT SAID, IN MATTERS OF NATIONAL INTERESTS WE AHVE TO BE FIRM IN OUR RESOLVE AND EVERY PREPARED FOR THE SACRIFICE NO MATTER HOW BIG IT MAY BE. THE GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN PLACES THE HIGHEST PRIORITY ON CULTIVATION OF PEACEFUL RELATIONS WITH ITS NEIGHBOURS BUT IT HAS TO BE PEACE WITH HONOUR AND DIGNITY. A SEMINAR ON INDIAN NUCLEAR TESTS WAS HELD IN ISLAMABAD TODAY IN WHICH STRATEGISTS, SCIENTISTS AND MILITARY EXPERTS PARTICIPATED.

THE SPEAKERS DEALT AT LENGTH THE HISTORIC BACKGROUND, THE IMPACT OF INDIAN NUCLEAR BLASTS, THE DANGER INHERENT FOR THE REGION IN GENERAL AND PAKISTAN IN PARTICULAR AND THE RESPONSE AND OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO PAKISTAN.

THE SPEAKERS EXPRESSED THE OPINION THAT WITH THE FIVE NUCLEAR TESTS, INDIA HAS DEMONSTRATED TO WEAPONISE AND DEPLOY THE NUCLEAR ARSENAL WHICH IS PAKISTAN SPECIFIC AS ISLAMABAD IS NUMBER ONE TARGET OF NEW DELHI AND NOT BEIJING.

THEY SAID CHOICES FOR PAKISTAN TODAY ARE QUALITATIVELY AND QUANTITATIVELY DIFFERENT THAN WHEN BOTH THE COUNTRIES WERE AT THE THRESHOLD STAGE. THEY SAID IF WE DECIDE TO RESPONSE IN KIND WITH THE INDIAN BLUFF, WE SHOULD BE READY FOR SACRIFICES AND THE HEAVY ECONOMIC COST AS A DIGNIFIED NATION.

THE PARTICIPANTS EXPRESSED THE OPINION THAT THE PRIME MINISTER MR. MUHAMMAD NAWAZ SHARIF IS RIGHT IN TAKING TIME AND CONSIDERING ALL ASPECTS OF THE CHANGED SCENARIO BEFORE FINALLY DECIDING ON A RESPONSE.

FEDERAL MINISTER FOR RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, RAJA MUHAMMAD ZAFRUL HAQ TODAY HAD A MEETING WITH JAMAT-E-ISLAMI CHIEF, QAZI HUSSAIN AHMAD IN ISLAMABAD.

THE MEETING HAS BEEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONSULTATIONS WITH THE NATIONAL POLITICAL LEADERS ON THE SITUATION ARISING AFTER INDIAN NUCLEAR EXPLOSION. THE FEDERAL MINISTER INFORMED JAMAT-E-ISLAMI CHIEF THAT THE GOVERNMENT INTENDS TO ADOPT CONSENSUS POLICY TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION. QAZI HUSSAIN AHMAD EXPLAINED HIS PARTY'S POINT OF VIEW ON THE SUBJECT.

PAKISTAN SAYS NO QUESTION OF RENUNCIATION OF THE OPTION OF NUCLEAR TEST AND ITS RESPONSE TO THE INDIAN TEST WILL BE WELL CONSIDERED SOBER AND MATURE. THIS WAS STATED BY THE FOREIGN SECRETARY AT A PRESS BRIEFING IN ISLAMABAD THIS AFTERNOON.

HE SAID SUGGESTIONS HAVE MADE TO PAKISTAN OF RESTRAINT BUT PAKISTAN HAS MADE IT CLEAR THAT IT HAS NEVER ACTED IN HASTE AND WILL TAKE A MEASURED DECISION DETERMINED BY THE COMPULSIONS OF OUR NATIONAL SECURITY.

HE SAID BEING A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY PAKISTAN CANNOT REMAIN IN-DIFFERENT TO THE ASPIRATIONS OF ITS PEOPLE TO MEET THE NUCLEAR CHALLENGE POSED BY INDIA. HE SAID PAKISTAN IS TAKING A DISPASSIONATE LOOK AT THE SITUATION.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY STARTED THE PROCESS OF IN-DEPTH CONSULTATIONS AND DELIBERATIONS BOTH ON THE POLITICAL AND PROFESSIONAL LEVELS TO MEET THE THREAT ARISING FROM THIS TOTALLY NEW AND GRAVE SITUATION. HE SAID WHY PAKISTAN IS BEING DISSUADED FROM AN OPTION WHICH IS OF VITAL NATIONAL INTEREST FOR US.

HE REITERATED THAT PAKISTAN WOULD NOT RESPOND IN HASTE TO THE SERIES OF NUCLEAR TESTS BY INDIA. ABOUT THE VISIT OF AN AMERICAN DELEGATION LED BY STROBE TALBOTT, THE FOREIGN SECRETARY SAID PAKISTAN GAVE DETAILED BRIEFING IN NO UNAMBIGUOUS TERMS. HE SAID THE VISIT PROVIDED A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO BOTH SIDES NOT ONLY TO EXCHANGE VIEWS ON EACH OTHER PERCEPTIONS ON THE PRESENT SITUATION BUT ALSO A UNDERSTAND EACH OTHERS' VIEW POINTS. HE SAID THAT THE AMERICANS HAVE GONE BACK WITH A MUCH BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF PAKISTAN'S POSITION INCLUDING OUR SECURITY CONCERNS.

THE PRIME MINISTER MR.MOHAMMAD NAWAZ SHARIF HAS WRITTEN LETTERS TO THE LEADERS OF GROUP-8 COUNTRIES ABOUT THE NUCLEAR TESTS BY INDIA.

IN HIS LETTER THE PRIME MINISTER SAID THE NUCLEAR TESTING BY INDIA OF WHOLE RANGE OF WEAPONRY INCLUDING SYSTEMS WHICH ARE PAKISTAN SPECIFIC HAS MULTIPLIED MANIFOLD THE IMMEDIACY AND THE MAGNITUDE OF THREAT TO PAKISTAN'S SECURITY. THE INDIA STEP HAS FUNDAMENTALLY ALTERED THE PRECARIOUS STRATEGIC BALANCE IN THE REGION.

NEW DELHI'S ACTION, HE SAID HAS RAISED THE POSSIBILITY OF AGGRESSIVE MILITARY ACTS AGAINST PAKISTAN.

THE PRIME MINISTER SAID THAT OVERT WEAPONISATION BY INDIA IS YET ANOTHER MANIFESTATION OF HIGHLY IRRESPONSIBLE AND RECKLESS ACTIONS TAKEN BY INDIA TO ESCALATE TENSION IN THE REGION IN RECENT WEEKS.

MR. MOHAMMAD NAWAZ SHARIF SAID THE BJP GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY MADE AGGRESSIVE DESIGNS AGAINST PAKISTAN A FUNDAMENTAL ARTICLE OF ITS POLICY AGENDA. HE SAID IN RECENT DAYS IT HAS TAKEN STEPS TO IMPLEMENT ITS DESIGNS INCLUDING MILITARY ACTION ACROSS THE LINE OF CONTROL IN KASHMIR.

IN THE FACE OF THESE OMINOUS DEVELOPMENTS WHICH POSE AN IMMEDIATE THREAT TO PAKISTAN'S SECURITY WE CANNOT BE EXPECTED TOP REMAIN COMPLACENT. HE SAID WE ARE ONCE AGAIN BEING ASKED TO EXERCISE RESTRAINT AT AN EXTREMELY CRITICAL JUNCTURE ON MATTERS INVOLVING NATIONAL SECURITY AND SURVIVAL.

HE EXPRESSED THE CONFIDENCE THAT G-8 LEADERS WOULD RECOGNISE AND BE RECEPTIVE TO PAKISTAN'S LEGITIMATE NEEDS FOR SELF DEFENCE.

THE PRESIDENT MR.MOHAMMAD RAFIQ TARAR HAS SAID PAKISTAN WILL NEVER COMPROMISE ON ITS PRINCIPLES AND ITS SOVEREIGN RIGHTS.

HE SAID NO SACRIFICE WILL BE SPARED FOR SAFEGUARDING THE NATIONAL INTERESTS.

THE PRESIDENT WAS ADDRESSING THE GRADUATION PARADE AT PAF ACADEMY AT RISALPUR.

SOON AFTER HIS ARRIVAL THE PRESIDENT INSPECTED THE PARADE IN A JEEP. THE CEREMONY WAS ATTENDED AMONG OTHERS BY THE NWFP GOVERNOR RETIRED LT. GENERAL ARIF BANGISH AND HIGH RANKING OFFICIALS.

THE SIX MEMBER SPECIAL CABINET COMMITTEE SET UP BY THE PRIME MINISTER R.MOHAMMAD NAWAZ SHARIF TO CONSULT POLITICIANS IN THE WAKE OF INDIAN NUCLEAR BLASTS WILL SUBMIT ITS REPORT WITHIN THREE TO FOUR DAYS.

THE FEDERAL MINISTER FOR RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS RAJA MOHAMMAD ZAFARUL HAQ SAID IN ISLAMABAD TODAY THAT THE PROCESS OF CONSULTATIONS WITH THE NATIONAL LEADERS WILL BE COMPLETED WITHIN A FEW DAYS. RAJA MOHAMMAD ZAFARUL HAQ HAD A MEETING WITH THE JAMAT-I-ISLAMI CHIEF QAZI HUSSAIN AHMAD IN ISLAMABAD.

THEY DISCUSSED THE DANGERS TO PAKISTAN'S SECURITY FOLLOWING INDIAN NUCLEAR BLASTS ON MAY 11 AND 13.

THE MEETING WAS PART OF THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO CONSULT NATIONAL LEADERS ON THE SITUATION RESULTING FROM THE INDIAN NUCLEAR BLASTS.
