INTRO: ISRAEL SAYS ITS MAIN CONCERN ABOUT PAKISTAN'S NUCLEAR
TESTS IS THAT THEY MIGHT ENCOURAGE RADICAL STATES IN THE REGION
TO DEVELOP NUCLEAR WEAPONS AS WELL. V-O-A'S AL PESSIN REPORTS
FROM JERUSALEM.

TEXT: THE CHIEF ISRAELI GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN, DAVID BAR ILLAN,
SAYS ISRAEL HAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE CONCEPT OF AN ISLAMIC COUNTRY
HAVING A NUCLEAR WEAPONS CAPABILITY. RATHER, HE SAYS, THE
CONCERN IS THAT SUCH TECHNOLOGY MIGHT REACH SPECIFIC COUNTRIES
COMMITTED TO ISRAEL'S DESTRUCTION.

                      ///BAR ILLAN ACT///

         OUR MAIN CONCERN IS THAT NUCLEAR WEAPONS WOULD FALL INTO
         THE HANDS OF THE REGIMES IN IRAN AND IRAQ. THAT, IN OUR
         OPINION, WOULD CAUSE DESTABILIZATION IN THE REGION AND
         WOULD POSE GRAVE DANGER TO THE PEACE OF THE WORLD.

                          ///END ACT///

ISRAEL IS WIDELY BELIEVED TO ALSO HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPONS
CAPABILITY, BUT THAT IS NOT OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED. MR. BAR
ILLAN SAYS EVEN IF IT DOES, ANY DANGER POSED BY A DEMOCRATIC
NUCLEAR-WEAPONS COUNTRY LIKE ISRAEL OR PAKISTAN IS FAR LESS THAN
THE DANGER WHICH WOULD BE POSED BY A NUCLEAR IRAN OR IRAQ.
