DATE=6/25/99 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT NUMBER=2-251095 TITLE=PAK / KASHMIR (L UPDATE) BYLINE=SCOTT ANGER DATELINE=ISLAMABAD CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: A TOP AMERICAN GENERAL HAS MET WITH PAKISTAN'S PRIME MINISTER TO DISCUSS THE CURRENT CRISIS BETWEEN PAKISTAN AND INDIA OVER KASHMIR. AS CORRESPONDENT SCOTT ANGER REPORTS, THE TWO COUNTRIES STAND ON THE EDGE OF WAR AS INDIA CONTINUES ITS CAMPAIGN TO DRIVE INSURGENTS FROM ITS SIDE OF THE DISPUTED LINE OF CONTROL. TEXT: PAKISTAN SAYS GENERAL ANTHONY ZINNI, COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE U-S CENTRAL COMMAND, DELIVERED A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT CLINTON TO PRIME MINISTER NAWAZ SHARIF, URGING HIM TO DE-ESCALATE THE GROWING CRISIS AND TO FIND A PEACEFUL SOLUTION WITH INDIA. A FOREIGN MINISTRY STATEMENT FOLLOWING THE MEETING CALLED FOR AN EVEN-HANDED APPROACH TO THE CRISIS BY THE UNITED STATES. THE STATEMENT SAYS THE CURRENT CRISIS REQUIRES A BALANCED AND CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH, IF PEACE IS TO PREVAIL IN THE REGION. THE STATEMENT DID NOT MENTION THE U-S STATE DEPARTMENT'S CALL THURSDAY FOR PAKISTAN TO WITHDRAW THE FORCES IT SUPPORTS FROM THE INDIAN SIDE OF THE LINE OF CONTROL. WASHINGTON SAYS ONLY THE PULL-OUT OF THE FORCES CAN DE-ESCALATE THE CRISIS, WHICH IS THREATENING TO EXPAND INTO AN ALL-OUT WAR BETWEEN THE TWO NUCLEAR NEIGHBORS. PAKISTAN HAS DENIED THAT IT IS SUPPORTING THE ARMED INSURGENTS WHO HAVE BEEN BATTLING INDIAN TROOPS SINCE EARLY MAY. PAKISTAN SAYS THE INSURGENTS ARE INDIGENOUS FREEDOM FIGHTERS WHO ARE RESISTING INDIAN RULE IN THE HIMALAYAN REGION. ///AMB: SOUND OF CROWD/// MEANWHILE, LEADERS OF PAKISTANI KASHMIR RALLIED SUPPORT IN THE CAPITAL, ISLAMABAD, FRIDAY. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE CHANTING ANTI-INDIAN SLOGANS VOWED TO CONTINUE WHAT THEY CALLED THE STRUGGLE TO FREE KASHMIR FROM INDIA. ///AMB: SOUND OF SHOUTING/// DEMONSTRATORS WANTED TO MARCH TO THE INDIAN EMBASSY BUT WERE STOPPED BY POLICE IN RIOT GEAR. THURSDAY, PRIME MINISTER SHARIF ONCE AGAIN OFFERED PEACE TALKS WITH INDIA -- BUT INDIA SAYS IT HAS RULED OUT ANY TALKS UNTIL PAKISTAN WITHDRAWS THE INSURGENTS BEHIND THE LINE OF CONTROL, WHICH WAS DRAWN IN 1972 AFTER THE LAST WAR.
