Moscow, 17 Apr (Itar-Tass) -- The first 1996 combat launching of the RS-12M Topol intercontinental ballistic missile [ICBM] was carried out today at 1100 [0700 GMT] during tactical exercises at the Plesetsk state test range. A training target in the Kamchatka area was successfully hit, Ilshat Baychurin, press center head of the Strategic Rocket Troops [SRT], told ITAR-TASS. He said that SRT Commander in Chief Igor Sergeyev described as "excellent" the actions of the launching combat crew and praised its flawless training and professionalism; he also signed a decree commending the crew members. The Topol intercontinental ballistic missile has been on alert duty for 12 years now. In the estimate of the SRT command, this launching has confirmed yet again the high combat readiness of the troops and the reliability of their weapons; it has also made it possible to extend the duration of use of rockets of this type. The program of the development of strategic nuclear forces of the Russian Federation up to the year 2005 envisages that self-propelled launching installations with RS-12M Topol missiles will become a base unit of the SRT. The Topol is a unique system capable of launches not only from a special launching pad, but from any other point of its itinerary.
