Building of New Strategic Nuclear Submarine Class Begins

INTERFAX 3 Nov 96

MOSCOW, Nov 3 (Interfax) -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin Sunday sent a telegram to the Severodvinsk shipbuilders who have begun building a fourth-generation strategic nuclear missile submarine, the Yury Dolgoruky, the president's press service told INTERFAX. A ceremony devoted to the event was held in Severodvinsk in the Arkhangelsk region of northern Russia. "This event is of major importance not only for the Severodvinsk shipbuilders, but also for the whole of Russia," the telegram says. Strategic nuclear missile submarines have not been built in Russia for about 10 years, the telegram goes on to say. "Symbolically, the breakthrough has been accomplished in the year marking the 300th anniversary of the Russian Fleet," it says. "For us the Russian Fleet is the symbol of the state, of the inviolability of its borders, and of stability," the Russian president wrote. He expressed confidence that "the glorious St. Andrew's flag will reach all seas and oceans."
