PUTIN, BUSH AGREE TO DISCUSSIONS ON NMD, DISARMAMENT. U.S.
President George W. Bush telephoned his Russian counterpart Vladimir
Putin on 1 May to assure him that Washington will not make any
unilateral decisions on missile defenses, Reuters reported from Moscow.
In a 12-minute conversation, the two leaders recommitted themselves to
more discussions about disarmament and other nuclear issues. A day
earlier, Putin had sent Bush a message responding to Washington's
proposals about a settlement of the Karabakh dispute, ITAR-TASS
reported. Putin said that progress on that issue is "a good example of
how our countries can successfully cooperate in solving complex regional
problems." PG
