After hours on January 3 the State Department posted the following Q and A statement on -- "Korea: Troop Cutback."

Q and A follows:

GE 2 UNCLASSIFIED

Q: Have the U.S. and the ROKG agreed to a cutback in U.S. force levels in South Korea?

A: No. There are no current plans to reduce U.S. forces in Korea. The U.S. and the ROKG consult closely on all security issues, including appropriate U.S. troop strength. Over the years, the U.S. troop strength in Korea has fluctuated in response to the North Korean threat and specific needs. Any future changes will also be evolutionary and be taken after consultations with the ROKG. NNNN
