MINISTRY OF DEFENCE 87/95 July 25, 1995 HMS VICTORIOUS SUCCESSFULLY FIRES A TRIDENT MISSILE HMS VICTORIOUS, the second of the United Kingdom's four new Trident submarines, successfully launched an unarmed Trident II (D5) ballistic missile at 2330 BST last night on the United States Eastern Range, off the coast of Florida as part of her Demonstration and Shakedown Operation (DASO). The purpose of the DASO is to demonstrate that each of the submarine's two crews has the required ability to safely handle, maintain and operate the strategic weapons system. The DASO also confirms that the submarine is able to launch and target a missile correctly. This launch is the first DASO launch of the Trident D5 missile by HMS VICTORIOUS, follows two successful launches by HMS VANGUARD last year.
