BALLISTIC MISSILE TEAM ASSESSES 14 IRAQI SITES FOR FUTURE MONITORING

                   Inspections Conducted from 17-25 February

The following has been received from the Special Commission set up under

Security Council resolution 687 (1991) in connection with the disposal of

Iraq's weapons of mass destruction:

The twenty-first ballistic missile inspection team has completed

assessing the capabilities of some 14 sites located in and around Baghdad and

their potential use in missile production activities. The team, led by

Patrice Palanque of France and comprised of some 14 experts from the

United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and Ukraine, conducted its

activities in Iraq from 17 to 25 February.

The sites and facilities inspected were identified by the Special

Commission as possible and potential support facilities in their current

missile production activities. The inspection focused on identifying

effective monitoring procedures for those sites. The data assembled during

the inspection will also assist the Commission in its operational planning for

the ongoing monitoring and verification phase of its work.

In line with the joint statement issued after the latest round of

high-level talks in Baghdad, further such missions are planned, both in the

ballistic missiles area and in the other areas of weapons capability covered

by the Commission's mandate.
