IRAQ SANCTIONS COMMITTEE SELECTS 'OVERSEERS'

The following information relating to arrangements for the implementation of resolution 986 (1995) -- the "oil-for-food" formula -- was issued today by the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 661 (1990) which is monitoring the sanctions against Iraq:

Pursuant to paragraph 1 in Section I of the procedures adopted yesterday by the Iraq Sanctions Committee in the discharge of its responsibilities as required by paragraph 12 of Security Council resolution 986 (1995), the Committee has, upon recommendation by its secretariat, decided today on the selection of the following four independent experts in international oil trade to serve as "overseers" at United Nations Headquarters:

Arnstein Wigestrand (Norway) Maurey G. Lorenz (United States) Bernard Cullet (France) Alexandre V. Kramar (Russian Federation)

Should there be a need for a fifth overseer as work progresses, Xie Changxian (China) would be recommended by the secretariat for that post.

Tono Eitel, Chairman of the Committee, has forwarded the names of the selected experts to the Secretary-General for appointment.
