Shakti Nuclear Weapons Tests
May 11-13, 1998

India claims to have tested three nuclear weapons on 11 May 1998, with yields of 45kt, 15kt, and 0.2kt, and to have additionally tested two weapons on 13 May, with yields of 0.5 kt and 0.3 kt. A number of photographs of the test area were subsequently released by the official government Press Information Bureau, which are included here with their original captions. Additional interpretive commentary is indicated in italics. The reported Shakti-1 test area is reasonably well documented, and available imagery provides a rather coherent depiction of this site. Avaiable photographs of the other test areas is less complete, and provides a rather fragmentary and somewhat confusing depiction of these areas.

The Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee visited the recent underground nuclear explosion test sites at Pokhran in Rajasthan on May 20, 1998.
