Volcanoes

Erupting volcanoes can produce lava flows, release poisonous gases, and violently expel rock and ash.

How to Prepare for a Volcanic Eruption

How to Respond to a Volcanic Eruption

  • Evacuate immediately if prompted by local authorities
  • Close doors, windows, and all ventilation (chimney vents, furnaces, air conditioners, fans, and other vents)
  • Stay indoors until the ash has settled, unless the roof is in danger of collapsing
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and goggles to avoid as much contact with ash as possible
  • Avoid driving in heavy ash fall unless absolutely required
  • When cleaning up:
    • Use an N-95 disposable respirator for long-term activities or a dust mask for short-term activities
    • Use caution when clearing ash from roof
