Tsunamis are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite.
How to Identify a Tsunami
- The following warnings will be broadcast over the radio and on TV:
- Advisory: An earthquake has occurred in the Pacific basin, which might generate a tsunami
- Watch: A tsunami was or may have been generated, but is at least two hours travel time to the area
- Warning: A tsunami was generated, which could cause damage; people in the warned area are strongly advised to evacuate
How to Respond to a Tsunami
- Move inland to higher ground immediately
- Save yourself, not your possessions
- Stay inland; there may be more than one wave
