Existing housing presents new challenges and opportunities that this tool will help you explore.  The goal of this tool is to provide you with a better understanding of the safety and sustainability issues associated with existing housing, and to aid you in building more realistic and comprehensive scopes of work. 


The tool specifically works by providing a personalized list of recommendations for you to read and consider incorporating into this and future projects.

Directions on how to use this tool:
  1. Once you have completed a full house assessment and triage and noted all construction deficiencies, come to http://www.fas.org/rehabright/toolkit/.
  2. Read through the Repair & Rehab Right Guidelines (PDF) to better understand how to approach rehab of existing houses and how this tool can help you. Feel comfortable with the concepts presented
  3. Click "Next" below.  
  4. Read the construction deficiency categories and check all those found in the assessment.  Click “Next.”
  5. Answer all questions in each checked deficiency category, click “Next” after each category.   
  6. At the end of the survey, personalized safety and sustainability recommendations, as well as further guidance from the Department of Energy (DOE) Workforce Guidelines are listed based on your answers. Read through the recommendations and think about which you can and should fit into your scope of work to make your project safer and more sustainable. Then email or print your results using the buttons on the page!
