ORGANIC MATERIAL IN CARBONACEOUS METEORITES

Mark Sephton, NIOZ

Carbonaceous meteorites allow the direct study of a number of classes of a biotic extra-terrestrial compounds. Relationships between these classes were previously unclear but have been investigated by carbon isotopic measurements on individual molecules. Results suggest that polyaromatic hydrocarbons are produced by the degradation of the abundant organic macromolecule and that straight chain hydrocarbons are terrestrial contaminants.
