Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) (U)

(U) The Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) provides global support for operational space systems and research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E). AFSCN also provides highly reliable, integrated command and control, communications and sensor systems to support the nation's space launch, surveillance, navigation, communications, and weather satellite operations.

(U) The AFSCN controls over 80 communication, navigation, missile warning, and meteorological satellites and other missions for DOD, NASA, and the United Kingdom. It consists of: two operational control nodes located at Falcon Air Force Base, Colorado, and Onizuka Air Force Station, California;17 telemetry, tracking and control (TT&C) antennas at 9 geographical locations worldwide; a communications calibration site at Camp Parks, California; space vehicle checkout facilities at Cape Canaveral Air Station, Florida, and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California; and communications connectivity between these locations.

(U) AFSCN has four segments: Range, Communications, Support, and Command and Control. The Range segment provides the AFSCN's space/ground interface between space vehicles and the Communication segment. The Communications segment provides support for satellite operations through the use of a complex communications network. This network is vital to the capability of the AFSCN, providing the interface between control centers and remote tracking stations. The AFSCN is sustained through the Support segment systems, which include logistics, engineering and test facilities. The Command and Control segment provides the capability for automated control and direction of satellite operations.

(U) There are two levels of Maintenance: Organizational, and Depot. This program provides for depot support for AFSCN Common User Element (CUE) under the cognizance of the Air Force Space Command.

(U) AFSCN Program Managers act as the local focal point for the Depot Support Contract (DSC) and shares DSC management responsibilities with an AFMC SSSG/SDNM counterpart.
