Wideband Gapfiller (U)
(U) The Wideband Gapfiller will be 3 commercial but DoD-owned, high capacity, military frequency modified, satellites to be launched beginning in FY04. The Wideband Gapfiller will provide a limited SHF/Ka capability during the transition between DSCS SLEP an objective wideband system. It will provide limited fixed to fixed and tactical communications as well as GBS type services to augment the GBS Phase II segments.

(U) The Gapfiller will be procured as a commercial satellite with a small amount of development money for military frequency modifications. It will be launched on a Medium Launch Vehicle (MLV), and will utilize both the SHF-band and the Ka-band to provide services.
User Impact (U):
(U) Without wideband communications, critical strategic and tactical users will be without the ability to receive or relay data vital to the execution of military operations. Many other fixed data dissemination users would be without service.
