It includes such measures as the use of aircraft, air defense weapons, weapons not used primarily in the air defense role, and electronic warfare. Operations that protect selected assets and forces from attack by destroying theater missile (TM) airborne launch platforms and/or TMs in flight. antenna cable vehicle air defense air defense artillery air defense artillery fire control officer air defense coordination net air defense coordination section air defense interface air defense identification zone air defense liaison officer air defense operations area air directed surface to air missile air defense systems integrator air defense warning antenna element army global command and control system above ground level advanced gunnery training system air interdiction All defensive measures designed to destroy attacking enemy aircraft or missiles in the Earth’s envelope of atmosphere, or to nullify or reduce the effectiveness of such attack. Ground based surface-to-air weapons for engaging air and missile targets. An area and the airspace above it within which procedures are established to minimize mutual interference between air defense and other operations. Air operations conducted to destroy, neutralize, or delay the enemy's military potential before it can be brought to bear effectively against friendly forces. That degree of dominance in the air battle of one force over another that permits the conduct of operations by the former and its related land, sea, and air forces at a given time and place without prohibitive interference by the opposing force. That degree of air superiority wherein the opposing Air Force is incapable of effective interference. The commander designated to assume overall responsibility for the operation of the airspace control system in the airspace control area. An order implementing the airspace control plan that provides the details of the approved requests for airspace control measures. It is published either as part of the air tasking order or as a separate document. The document approved by the joint force commander that provides specific planning guidance and procedures for the airspace control system for the joint force AOR/JOA. The coordination, integration, and regulation of the use of airspace of defined dimensions. attack and launch early reporting to theater air lines of communications united states army materiel command aviation and missile command air and missile defense air and missile defense coordinator air and missile defense planning and control system air and missile defense workstation antenna mast group avenger maintenance trainer army nuclear, biological and chemical information system area of operations air operations center area of interest area of responsibility armored personnel carrier armor piercing discarding sabot-tracer aerial port of debarkation auxiliary power unit armor Within a unified command, subordinate unified command, or joint task force, the commander will assign overall responsibility for air defense to a single commander. Normally this will be the component commander with the preponderance of air defense capability and the C4 capability to plan and execute integrated air defense operations. Representation from the other components involved will be provided, as appropriate, to the AADC’s headquarters. (DOD, NATO) A geographical area wherein a commander is directly capable of influencing operations by maneuver or fire support systems normally under the commander's command or control. That area of concern to the commander, including the area of influence, areas adjacent thereto, and extending into enemy territory to the objectives of current or planned operations. This area also includes areas occupied by enemy forces that could jeopardize the accomplishment of the mission. The AOI for ADA commanders includes all areas from which the enemy could launch aircraft or missiles against the protected force. Also called AOI. See also area of influence. An operational area defined by the joint force commander for land and naval forces. Areas of operation do not typically encompass the entire operational area of the joint force commander, but should be large enough for component commanders to accomplish their missions and protect their forces. Also called AO. ADA units are typically assigned an AO also. This area is actually three-dimensional as it encompasses the airspace above. The AO may be called a missile, joint, or SHORAD engagement zone (MEZ, JEZ, SHORADEZ). It may not exactly correspond to the supported unit AO. The geographical area associated with a combatant command within which a combatant commander has authority to plan and conduct operations. 2. In naval usage, a predefined area of enemy terrain for which supporting ships are responsible for covering by fire on known targets or targets of opportunity and by observation. Also called AOR. army forces antiradiation missile army national guard army space command all source analysis system antisatellite system army service component commander anti-ship cruise missile area support group air to surface missile ammunition supply point army space program office army tactical missile system army tactical command and control system army tactical data link antenna/transceiver group anti-tank guided missile army theater missile defense element air tasking order allied tactical publication Offensive operations intended to destroy and disrupt enemy TM capabilities before, during, and after launch. The objective of these operations is to prevent the launch of TMs by attacking each element of the overall system, including such actions as destroying launch platforms, RSTA platforms, C2 nodes, and missile stocks and infrastructure. aviation automatic video tracker airborne warning and control system Any missile that does not rely upon aerodynamic surfaces to produce lift and consequently follows a ballistic trajectory when thrust is terminated. The commander or individual has the authority to require consultation between the agencies involved, but does not have the authority to compel agreement. In the event that essential agreement cannot be obtained, the matter shall be referred to the appointing authority. Coordinating authority is a consultation relationship, not an authority through which command may be exercised. Coordinating authority is more applicable to planning and similar activities than to operations. The JFC will normally designate a JFACC. A general term applied to a combatant commander, subunified commander, or joint task force commander authorized to exercise combatant command (command authority) or operational control over a joint force. If designated by the JFC, the senior land commander in a joint force who exercises command and control of all assigned land forces. A group formed by the JFC to accomplish broad targeting oversight functions that may include but are not limited to coordinating target information, providing targeting guidance and priorities, and preparing and/or refining joint target lists. The board is normally comprised of representatives from the joint staff, all components, and if required, component subordinate units. The integration of joint force capabilities to destroy enemy theater missiles in flight or prior to launch or to otherwise disrupt the enemy’s theater missile operations through an appropriate mix of mutually supportive passive missile defense, active missile defense, attack operations, and supporting C4I measures.
