Q. Does the U.S. government believe that China is still providing weapons to Middle Eastern countries? What happened to their pledge to observe MTCR guidelines?
A. China has agreed to observe the guidelines and parameters of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). We have been told by the PRC that China will announce its commitment on the effective date of the lifting of the sanctions on the two Chinese firms.
The PRC commitment is an important step forward in international efforts to contain the spread of sensitive military technology.
We are currently studying the reports of recent Chinese transfers of military technology to the Middle East, and we continue to monitor Chinese behavior.
We have made it clear to the PRC that if any transfers on their part trigger U.S. sanctions law, the United States will not hesitate to take the actions required by law.
