PAKISTAN'S CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF MEETS WITH U.S. OFFICIALS

(Gen. Waheed discusses regional security with Talbott) (460)

Washington -- Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, General Abdul Waheed, has just

concluded a visit to Washington, where he met with high-level U.S.

officials, including Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott and National

Security Adviser Anthony Lake.

General Waheed arrived in Washington March 29 and will conclude his official

visit to the United States April 7. The general's party includes his wife,

Mrs. Yasmin Waheed; Lt. General Jehangir Karamat, commander of 2 Corps;

Major General Ali Kuli Khan Khattak, Director General of Military

Intelligence; Brigadier Khalid Maqbool, Pakistani Defense and Military

Attache to Washington; and Colonel Jason Greer, U.S. Army attache to

Pakistan.

In a meeting at the State Department April 1, Deputy Secretary Talbott and

General Waheed discussed regional security in South Asia, as well as

Pakistan's role in peace-keeping operations in Somalia, according to a

State Department spokesman.

Pakistani military troops "have played and continue to play a constructive

role in Somalia," the spokesman said. The Clinton Administration, he

added, "welcomed his visit."

Talbott will visit India April 6-8 and Pakistan April 8-10, the spokesman

said, noting that he will be the highest-ranking Clinton administration

official to visit South Asia.

Following his meeting with Talbott, General Waheed met with President

Clinton's national security adviser, Anthony Lake. Earlier in the day, the

1eneral spoke with Secretary of Defense William Perry and met with General

John Shalikashvili, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Frank

Wisner, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.

Wisner also hosted a luncheon at the Pentagon in honor of General Waheed.

On the morning of April 1, Waheed laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns

at the Arlington National Cemetery. The general concluded the day at a

dinner given in his honor by Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States,

Maleeha Lodhi. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Peter

Tarnoff, was among those who attended.

The previous two days were equally eventful. The general met with R. James

Woolsey, Director of Central Intelligence, March 30 and with Togo West,

Jr., Secretary of the Army, on March 31. Later on March 31, Waheed was

awarded the Legion of Merit, Degree of Commander, by his U.S. counterpart,

General Gordon Sullivan, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army.

The general will conclude his visit to the United States with a tour of U.S.

military sites in Florida, Texas and Kansas.

Waheed will visit U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force in Tampa,

Florida April 4; Fort Hood, Texas, April 5; and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas,

April 6.
