CLINTON NOMINATES CROWE AS ENVOY TO THE UNITED KINGDOM

1ashington -- President Clinton announced his intention March 22 to nominate

Admiral William Crowe Jr. as U.S. ambassador to Great Britain and Northern

Ireland.



Following is the text of the announcement as released by the office of the

press secretary at The White House:

The president today announced his intent to nominate Admiral William Crowe

Jr., as ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern

Ireland.



In announcing this nomination, President Clinton said, "Admiral Crowe has

distinguished himself throughout four decades of dedicated public service.

I am very pleased that he will continue his services to this nation and

that I will be able to rely on his wise counsel in this very important

position."



Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Crowe served in the

United States Navy for 47 years.  His assignments included Commander in

Chief of the Allied Forces, Southern Europe; Commander in Chief, U.S. Naval

Forces, Europe; Command in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command; and Commander,

Middle East Force, based in Bahrain.  Currently he is counselor at the

Center for Strategic and International Studies in the District of Columbia,

professor of  Geopolitics at the University of Oklahoma and Chairman of the

President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.



Admiral Crowe holds a bachelor's degree from the United States Naval

Academy, a master's degree from Stanford University and master's and

doctoral degrees from Princeton University.  He has been married to Shirley

Grinell for 40 years; they have three children.
