Washington -- White House Chief of Staff-designate Erskine Bowles
announced December 18 that James B. Steinberg would be Deputy National
Security Advisor and Deputy Assistant to the President for National
Security Affairs.

James B. Steinberg
Deputy National Security Advisor
and Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs

As Chief of Staff of the U.S. State Department since November 1996 and
Director of its Policy Planning Staff since 1994, Mr. Steinberg has
been a senior advisor to Secretary of State Warren Christopher, with a
central role in formulating and coordinating U.S. foreign policy. He
also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Analysis in the Bureau
of Intelligence and Research from 1993-94. His distinguished career as
a public servant, policy advisor and analyst spans all three branches
of the U.S. government, as well as leading research institutes in the
United States and abroad. In his new position, he will assist the
National Security Advisor in developing our nation's foreign policy
and coordinating the Administration's new foreign policy team -- and
he will give the President the benefit of his exceptionally broad and
deep experience in foreign policy.
