VOICED AT:

INTRO: IN SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, THE LONG PROCESS OF JURY

SELECTION HAS BEGUN FOR THE UNABOMBER TRIAL WITH SOME 600

PROSPECTIVE JURORS REPORTING TO THE STATE FAIRGROUNDS TO FILL OUT

QUESTIONNAIRES. AS V-O-A'S GREG FLAKUS REPORTS FROM OUR WEST

COAST BUREAU, THE SURVEY IS DESIGNED TO CALL ATTENTION TO PEOPLE

WHO MAY NOT BE SUITED FOR JURY SERVICE IN THIS HIGH-PROFILE CASE.

TEXT: REPORTERS VIEWING THE PROCESS FROM OUTSIDE SAID THE FORM

GIVEN TO THE PROSPECTIVE JURORS APPEARED TO BE ABOUT 15 PAGES IN

LENGTH. SUCH SURVEYS ARE OFTEN USED TO HELP ATTORNEYS AND THE

JUDGE IDENTIFY PROBLEMS IN ADVANCE OF THE ACTUAL COURTROOM

QUESTIONING OF JURORS, WHICH, IN THE UNABOMBER CASE, IS SET FOR

NOVEMBER 12. U-S DISTRICT JUDGE GARLAND BURRELL HAS RULED THAT

NEWS MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES MAY NOT SEE THE QUESTIONNAIRES UNTIL

AFTER THE JURY SELECTION PROCESS IS COMPLETE. THE JUDGE IS ALSO

KEEPING THE IDENTITY OF JURORS SECRET UNTIL THE TRIAL ITSELF IS

FINISHED.

THE JURY WILL DECIDE THE FATE OF THEODORE KACZYNSKI, A FORMER

MATHEMATICS PROFESSOR WHO PROSECUTORS SAY PLANNED AND CARRIED

OUT A SERIES OF MAIL BOMBINGS THAT KILLED THREE PEOPLE AND

INJURED 23 OTHERS BETWEEN 1978 AND 1995. (SIGNED).
