Zedetkyi Kyun

In the summer of 1994 Myanmar granted China access to several islands for the construction of SIGINT facilities. Zedetkyi Kyun [St Matthew's] island off the Tenasserim coast in the southeast is especially sensitive because it is located off the coast of Burma's southernmost tip at Kawthaung [Victoria] Point. Close to the northern entrance to the Straits of Malacca, this facility is well situated to monitor the approaches to the Strait of Malacca.
