Chief --- MAZURKEVICH, Anatoliy, Col-Gen (ãåíåðàë-ëåéòåíàíò Àíàòîëèé Ìàçóðêåâè÷) (Krasnaya Zvezda, 17 July 2001; Agentstvo Voyennykh Novostey, 21 Mar 03).

"According to the Western special services, Mazurkevich is a GRU career staffer, who set up an effective network of agents in the North American continent during his years spent working abroad, a network that has still not been exposed by U.S. counterintelligence and is still operating successfully.  It is no coincidence that when the question of Mazurkevich's appointment as defense attaché at the Russian Embassy in the United States was being decided a few months ago the FBI raised a howl.  The matter was reported to the U.S. President personally.  The Americans concluded that Mazurkevich's assignment to the United States aimed to sharply step up Russian military intelligence's activity on U.S. territory ahead of the start of work on the deployment of national missile defense" (Nezavisimaya Gazeta, 19 Jul 01).]

the source, the general has been withdrawn from the department and will not be appointed its deputy chief. This position has been vacated by Lieutenant General Nikolai Zlenko who reached the retirement age (Agentstvo Voyennykh Novostey 8 Nov 01).]

Deputy Chief --- CHERNENKO, Viktor I., Lieutenant-General (Military News Bulletin No 011, 1 Nov 02).

  • [Born on July 24, 1948 in the village of Sverdlikovo, Kursk Region, he graduated from the Tashkent Higher Tank Command School (1970), the Military Academy of the Armour (1980), and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces (1987). He served in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and the Siberian and Leningrad military districts. Since 1987 he had served in the General Staff and in 1990 was dispatched to the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation.  He was appointed Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation of the Defence Ministry by presidential decree of September 2, 2002 (Military News Bulletin No 011, 1 Nov 02).]

He had never been a lawyer or a diplomat, but like Lapshov he studied together with Grachev."  Daughter married one of Minister GRACHEV'S sons.]
