A. DESCRIPTION: THE M1A2 TANK (LIN Z77258) IS A FULL- TRACKED, LOW PROFILE LAND COMBAT ASSAULT WEAPONS SYSTEM WITH FULL ARMOR PROTECTION, SHOOT-ON-THE-MOVE FIREPOWER, AND A HIGH DEGREE OF MANEUVERABILITY AND TACTICAL AGILITY. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH A 120MM MAIN GUN, A CAL 50 MACHINEGUN, AND TWO 7.62 MACHINEGUNS. B. CAPABILITIES: THE TANK HAS THE CAPABILITY TO ENGAGE THE FULL SPECTRUM OF ENEMY GROUND TARGETS WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF ACCURATE POINT AND AREA FIRE WEAPONS. M1A2 ENHANCEMENTS INCLUDE: (1). A COMMANDER'S INDEPENDENT THERMAL VIEWER (CITV) WHICH PROVIDES THE TANK COMMANDER WITH INDEPENDENT TARGET ACQUISITION AND BATTLEFIELD SURVEILLANCE CAPABILITY IN ALL VISIBILITIES. (2). A POSITION/NAVIGATION (POS/NAV) UNIT WHICH PROVIDES DATA INDICATING POSITION/HEADING OF THE TANK. (3). AN INTERVEHICULAR INFORMATION SYSTEM RADIO INTERFACE UNIT (IVIS-RIU) WHICH PROVIDES AN INTERFACE BETWEEN THE SINCGARS AND THE CORE ELECTRONICS TO ALLOW TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION OF ALPHA-NUMERIC AND GRAPHICS DATA WITHOUT IMPACTING CURRENT VOICE COMMUNICATIONS. (4). A COMMANDER'S INTEGRATED DISPLAY (CID) WHICH IS A SINGLE UNIT THAT INCLUDES DISPLAYS AND CONTROLS FOR THE CITV AND THE COMMAND, CONTROL, AND COMMUNICATIONS FUNCTIONS THROUGH THE ELECTRONICS. (5). A DRIVER'S INTEGRATED DISPLAY (DID) WHICH REPLACES THE EXISTING M1A1 DRIVER'S INSTRUMENT PANEL, DRIVER'S MASTER PANEL, AND DRIVER'S ALERT PANEL. C. EMPLOYMENT: THE M1A2 TANK IS TO BE USED AS THE PRINCIPAL ASSAULT WEAPON OF TANK BATTALIONS DURING ALL TYPES OF COMBAT OPERATIONS, CONDUCTED UNDER ANY CONDITION, FROM LOW-INTENSITY CONFLICT, TO GENERAL NUCLEAR AND NON-NUCLEAR SITUATIONS. THE TANK WILL BE EMPLOYED AS THE DECISIVE ELEMENT OF ARMY FORCES TO DEFEAT AN ENEMY FORCE USING FIRE AND MANEUVER. IN THE DEFENSE, THE TANK WILL BE USED AS A PART OF A COMBINED ARMS TEAM TO PREVENT, RESIST, REPULSE OR DESTROY AN ENEMY ATTACK. D. BASIS OF ISSUE: THE M1A2 WILL REPLACE THE M1, AND THE M60 SERIES OF MAIN BATTLE TANKS ON A ONE FOR ONE BASIS AS DIRECTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY. E. POWER REQUIREMENTS: NONE. F. TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS: USAF C5 TRANSPORTABLE, REQUIRES A HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRANSPORTER FOR GROUND TRANSPORT. G. PERSONNEL/MAINTENANCE IMPACTS: (1). OPERATOR: (A).
