o        [-- [Presenter Natalya Zabuzova] Our Voronezh correspondent Olga Chernova has managed to visit a unique regiment.  For decades this secret military base has provided the country with unique air force technology. Its graduates have carried out hundreds of extremely complex tests of combat hardware, news of which emerged only today.

[Video shows servicemen in dress uniform parading with flag at air base.]

-- [Correspondent] Few people are familiar with the daily routine of the 445th [As heard - both the flag and a commemorative 49th anniversary certificate shown in the video clearly describe the unit as the "455th Bomber Aviation Regiment"] Aviation Instruction and Research Regiment of Bombers and Reconnaissance Aircraft.  Even celebrations marking the [49th] anniversary of the unit's foundation are restricted to a narrow circle of people, together with air force veterans, close friends and relatives. The record of this unique Russian air force regiment includes hundreds of secret operations. The 445th Regiment is regarded as the backbone of the country's frontline bomber force. Here they draw up the main documentation on flying techniques and aerodynamics and test the latest types of armaments and equipment.
[Video shows a map with flight paths of historic flights out of Voronezh marked on it.]

-- [Commander of 445th Bomber Aviation Regiment Sergey Shatalov, captioned] It was us who, for the first time in the history of our aviation, staged an operation in which 10 Su-24M aircraft flew to the Vostok-93, sorry Voskhod-93 exercise.  That was in May 1993.  This was a unique flight operation which is unlikely to be repeated.
[Video shows a mid-air refuelling operation, a pilot in his cockpit, a darkened cockpit at night, radar screen.]

-- [Correspondent] These unique pictures of the squadron's nonstop flight from Voronezh to the Transbaykal Military District are being shown for the first time.  It lasted 12 hours. Four in-flight refuellings were carried out.  The 445th Regiment has taken part in fighting in Tajikistan and the two Chechen campaigns.  During one year alone of the counterterrorist operation in the North Caucasus the Voronezh pilots carried out over 1,000 combat sorties.
[Video shows aerial footage of hit, accompanied by unmonitorable communications between pilots and controllers and triumphant shouts.]

-- [Deputy Commander of Squadron of 445th Bomber Aviation Regiment Aleksey Dolgikh, captioned] We have destroyed bases and vehicles and created obstructions in the mountains so that nobody can through. Most of our work in the Argun Gorge was on the creation of obstructions. In Groznyy we helped our soldiers. Every sortie is like the first time, you know.
[Video shows a notice listing over 1,100 sorties in the North Caucasus counterterrorist operation and decorations awarded to servicemen between March and April 1995 and between September 1999 and March 2000.  Camera then shows a flight planning document.]

-- [Correspondent] This year the ranks of the air force regiment have been swelled by young pilots and navigators. The Defence Ministry has increased the fuel consumption ceiling and the pilots now have the opportunity to perfect their skills in the sky. (NTV Mir, 3 May 02)]
